This stage of development is what we at Little Scholars like to call the “growth spurt.” Each child at this stage is silly, imaginative, and energetic, and they have plenty of opportunity every day to show all the little growing talents they possess. The golden middle between what children can do by themselves and what can be achieved with the support of the teacher is what our curriculum is based on. Each child is guided and monitored through learning activities to get them to the next stage – obtaining a new understanding built on both their prior knowledge and the new knowledge gained with the help of dedicated teachers.

Language/Communication

Conversation. This is the main focus of all communication, and our little explorers are no different. Little Scholars’ curriculum had been designed with this in mind, and we have carefully crafted each day to engage every child in conversation and storytelling. In our book-rich environment, every child can increase their vocabulary, improve on grammar and sentence construction, and most importantly develop an understanding that is unique to their world. Through weekly activities like show-and-tell every little scholar will become a storyteller in their own right.

Physical

Preschoolers are adept at walking, climbing, hopping, skipping, marching, dancing, and even galloping. That is why it is important that we provide each child ample opportunity to move in a fun fashion to promote their good physical health. Safe games, dancing, and physical activities both indoors and outside allow each child to get a stronger sense of their gross motor abilities. Each day your child will be practicing hand-eye coordination through building block structures, puzzles, stringing beads, using tools, sensory exploration center, and of course using kids scissors, crayons, and other forms of fine motor attributes.

Social/Emotional

Through various carefully designed areas in each class children have a chance to explore make-believe and dress-up play. Each child is urged to develop social play and pretend play with peers. Children also have many opportunities to develop emotionally by drawing pictures and engaging in other forms of artistic expression – the results of which are displayed at various family events to which parents are, of course, invited. It is important to us that all children always feel secure, comfortable, welcomed, and cared for every day at our center. Children will be filling their emotional and social “buckets” daily to have a sense of accomplishment at the end of every month, using How Full Is Your Bucket? For Kids, by Tom Rath and Mary Reckmeyer.

Cognitive

In the modern world, a well-rounded, successful individual is a global individual, and we at Little Scholars like to take the preschoolers’ voracious minds on fun, exciting, educational trips around the world. Part of our learning curriculum is based on a classic book Around the World in 80 Days, in an age-appropriate adaptation, through which children learn about different countries and peoples. They also learn songs and hear music native to the region they are visiting. But the fun doesn’t stop there. Children also learn dress habits and culinary attributes, and even attempt to “cook” some of the dishes they learn about. Our motto is “Let’s explore!” – or as Japanese would say it, “Tanken mimashou!” Little Scholars is dedicated to advancing each child’s cognitive development through memories and experiences everyday.

Self-Help/Adaptive

Independence is very important to every child’s development. Little Scholars’ faculty and staff are here to help each child reach the level of independence that they are comfortable with to learn and be ready for school. Each child learns to manage their own personal possessions by using their cubby to store and retrieve their personal belongings, and they have daily opportunities to complete developmentally appropriate tasks through practicing how to write and engage in appropriate play activities through out the classroom. They actively participate in developmentally appropriate group activities such as circle time and structured table toys activities. Through sequencing, rote counting, making predictions, and singing songs every child will be ready for kindergarten months before they get there.
