Learning About Personal Space at Little Scholars Downtown Brooklyn

Throughout February, our classrooms at Little Scholars Downtown Brooklyn focused on an important etiquette theme: personal space.

Children explored what personal space means and why it matters. Through guided conversations and age appropriate activities, teachers helped children understand that personal space is the space around their bodies that helps them feel comfortable and safe. Children learned what is okay and what is not okay when it comes to being close to others.

As part of this learning, children practiced how to have friends while still respecting their own space and the space of others. Teachers modeled and reinforced simple strategies, such as using words, paying attention to body cues, and giving space when a friend needs it.

These lessons support social emotional growth by helping children build self awareness, empathy, and respect. Understanding personal space gives children tools they can use every day during play, transitions, and group activities.

By exploring this theme throughout the month, children were able to see how personal space connects to friendships, feelings, and positive interactions. This is an important step in learning how to care for themselves and others in a shared environment.
