It’s a great question, and the answer is a little different at Little Scholars because we offer both! Daycare, referring to our Infant Program (ages 3 to 12 months) and Toddler Program (ages 1 to 2), centers on responsive, individualized caregiving — building secure attachment with consistent caregivers, meeting each child’s feeding and sleep needs, and introducing gentle play and sensory exploration. The focus at this stage is on emotional security, physical development, and the very beginnings of social interaction.

Preschool, for children ages 2 and up, introduces a more intentional curriculum. Our Preschool Program uses the Frog Street Preschool Curriculum to build early literacy, numeracy, language development, creativity, and the social and emotional skills children need as they move toward kindergarten. The free 3K and UPK programs use the Creative Curriculum for a more structured school-readiness experience.

At every stage, play is the primary vehicle for learning at Little Scholars. The balance simply shifts as children grow — from fully responsive caregiving for the youngest children to curriculum-guided exploration for preschoolers. All programs are available across our Brooklyn and Manhattan locations.

Preschool programs at Little Scholars normally begin when a child is two years old. A preschool for 2 year olds (24 months) may be available at some locations. Additionally, they provide programs for older kids, including UPK (ages 4-5) and 3K (3–4).

Our private Preschool Program uses the Frog Street Preschool Curriculum, which develops early language, math, science, creativity, and social-emotional skills through hands-on learning and purposeful play.

Children enrolled in 3-K for All, which is free for eligible NYC families, follow the Creative Curriculum through guided exploration, classroom learning centers, and group projects. Absolutely — the safety and wellbeing of every child in our care is our first commitment, and we’re proud of the standards we hold ourselves to. All Little Scholars preschool locations are licensed by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) and undergo regular inspections covering hygiene practices, facility access controls, staff-to-child ratios, emergency preparedness, and rest procedures.

Security measures at every location include controlled entry systems that restrict access to authorized individuals, a sign-in and sign-out procedure at pickup, video monitoring, and documented authorization lists for every child. Every team member passes a background check before starting work with children, and all staff are current in CPR and first aid certification. For preschool programs participating in the NYC DOE’s 3K and UPK for All initiatives, our centers also meet DOE accreditation requirements in addition to the DOHMH license.
