Some days at Little Scholars Downtown Brooklyn are simply unforgettable. Zoo Day was one of them.
Our teaching team transformed the art room into a full animal adventure. Every corner had something to discover: zoo animal decorations covered the walls, an animal-themed backdrop set the scene, and inflatable jumping animals waited to be ridden and bounced on. The children arrived to a world that felt like it had been built just for them, because it had.
One of the favorite spots of the day was the sensory table. Children used picture cards to guide them as they dug through noodles searching for matching animals. It was a quiet, focused activity that turned into something joyful and playful every single time a little hand pulled out the right match.
The ball pit gave kids a place to jump, laugh, and play freely. The inflatable animals kept the energy going. And throughout all of it, the children were learning without even realizing it: matching, exploring, taking turns, and using their imaginations to bring a whole zoo to life inside our school.
This is what we mean when we talk about play-based learning. It is not just a phrase we use. It is what our children experience every day, in moments like these, where the classroom becomes something extraordinary and learning feels like pure adventure.
At Little Scholars, we believe that a child who loves coming to school is a child who is growing. Zoo Day gave every little one a reason to light up, and watching them explore, discover, and play together reminded us exactly why we do this work.
